  •

Howsoever undesirable it may be but illness is a constant companion of human-animal life. Most known illnesses are not infectious. Some are very infectious. Covid-19, caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, is among the most infectious diseases known to humans.
  • Not all infectious diseases cause an epidemic or pandemic. But those that do pass through certain stages of progression.
All such illnesses begin as an outbreak. The disease-causing pathogen passes from patient-zero to other persons depending on the infectibility of the pathogen. This depends on the R0 or R-naught value, which is the number of persons who will get the virus from an infected person on an average. In case of Covid-19, it ranges from 2 to 2.5.
  • When sufficient people are infected with an illness, the stage is called an outbreak. For it to become an epidemic, it needs to cross local boundaries. For a pandemic, it needs to cross national boundaries. In the case of Covid-19, the novel coronavirus first crossed over to Thailand, the second country to record the pandemic.
